Machu Picchu is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Peru. When you think of vacationing in Peru Machu Picchu is a must visit. Getting to Machu Picchu itself is one heck of a trip once you arrive in Lima or Cusco. If you go through a travel site like Expedia, they may suggest you fly out to Cusco directly. Alternately you may go to Lima Peru and then go to Cusco. Either way you will arrive in Cusco.
Cusco is at a much higher elevation than Maccu Picchu it self. At 11200 feet it was pretty difficult for me to breath at first. Every hotel lobby has different types of Coca tea to combat altitude sickness. Different levels of concentration. They also have the leaf for chewing which is also suppose to help. It didn't help me.
Coca Leaf Tea
The process involves an early morning van pick up from the hotel to the train station to the city of Machu Picchu. The train ride is so intense that you go through huge mountains that you could see from the glass ceiling of the train.
This city is kept vehicle free due to pollution and the sacred of the mountain. From there you would take a bus ride or you may choose to hike. It’s a strenuous hike. Remember to take your passport and you also need the bus ticket. Your travel agent would have given you a permit to enter Machu Picchu. I didn’t find elevation sickness although it quite a climb. Food is not allowed up there. Make sure to take water. There are no places to buy anything thing at the top. At the base you may be able to buy water and souvenirs.
